What are the requirements for a minor child to travel alone?
Infants, children and adolescents may travel alone or accompanied by a responsible adult, depending on their age.
- Infants and children before turning 8 years old must always travel accompanied by a person over 18 years old.
-
Children 8 years old until the day before turning 12 years old must travel accompanied by a person over 18 years old or an independent adolescent (if traveling with a parent). If they are traveling in a different cabin, at the time of boarding, they must inform the crew which seat the minor is in. They can also travel alone, but it is mandatory to request our unaccompanied minor service where LATAM personnel will guard the child during the entire journey, including immigration and security controls, until the child is handed over to the authorized person at the end of the trip.
Children will be placed at the back of the airplane, so our crew will have greater visibility and control of children. They will be the first to board and the last to disembark.
-
Teenagers aged 12 until the day before turning 18 can travel alone by presenting a notarized authorization signed by a parent or legal guardian at the check-in counter (for international flights). This authorization is not required for emancipated minors. If preferred, the Unaccompanied Minor Service can be contracted, which requires notarized authorization. You can find more information about the documents required for international trips on our Unaccompanied minor page.
Important: From 16 years old, minors can travel on domestic flights within Brazil without needing to present any authorization.
Trips with other airlines: The Unaccompanied Minor (UM) Service is available only for LATAM operated flights, and it cannot be booked on flights with code share and/or in connection with other airlines.
Please note that the minimum ages required for a minor to travel alone may differ from airline to airline. Therefore, we recommend that you check the full details and regulations before purchasing your travel ticket.
Pay special attention to minors between 12 and 16 years old, as they may be required to travel with a responsible adult on connection flights.
Important: minors traveling within Peru must present a notarized authorization signed by a parent. Keep in mind that the notarized authorization should be presented in physical format to the Peruvian migratory authority so that the minor is permitted to leave the country. The passenger is also responsible for keeping this document since it will be required upon return in case the final destination is a province.
Check the authorization details for minors traveling within Peru and abroad.
You can find more information in our Unaccompanied Minors section. Also, remember that minors may require permission from their parents or guardians.
We suggest consulting with the corresponding entity regarding the documents and authorizations required for traveling with minors alone or with one of their parents.
